From weather forecasting to radiation monitoring: an excursion for students of the National Children's Technopark at Belhydromet
On April 15, Belhydromet welcomed guests — students of the educational institution "National Children's Technopark" who are studying in the field of "Natural Resources." An educational excursion was organized for the students, allowing them to glimpse into the world of hydrometeorology and radiation monitoring and learn about the work of specialists from the inside. The excursion began with a presentation by Georgy Kamlyuk , a leading meteorological engineer from the Service for Meteorologica and Climate Monitoring, Database. The expert introduced the students to the history of the hydrometeorological service of Belarus. Georgy Georgievich emphasized its important role for the country — Belhydromet's work directly affects the safety and comfort of citizens and helps plan activities across a wide range of sectors, from agriculture to transportation. After the theoretical part, the students headed to the automatic meteorological site. There, they became acquainted with meteorological instruments. A specialist explained how the devices help collect accurate data on the state of the atmosphere — temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, and other parameters. The students' knowledge was expanded by Alla Shaybak , Head of the Operational Radiation Control and Emergency Monitoring Department of the Radiation Monitoring Service. She covered key aspects of monitoring the radiation situation in Belarus. The students learned how the integrated monitoring system works, what methods are used to assess levels of radioactive contamination of the environment, and what measures are taken by government authorities to ensure public radiation safety. During the conversation with the students, Alla Mikhailovna drew particular attention to the importance of continuous radiation monitoring in Belarus. She reminded them that April 26, 2026 , will mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident — an event that fundamentally changed approaches to radiation safety around the world. Alla Shaybak emphasized: Belarus has an extensive network of radiation monitoring stations — they track radiation levels in real time; decades of accumulated experience allow for a rapid response to any changes in the radiation situation; modern technologies and methodologies ensure high measurement accuracy, guaranteeing public safety. "Today we can confidently say that the radiation situation in most of the country is stable, and the gamma radiation dose rate is within natural background levels," noted Alla Shaybak. "But the memory of Chernobyl teaches us to remain vigilant. Continuous radiation monitoring is not just a job — it is our responsibility to future generations!" Equally exciting was the part of the excursion led by Marina Luksha , Deputy Head of the Meteorological Forecast Service. The expert explained how weather forecasts are made — from primary data collection to the final forecast that residents of the country see. The students learned about the specifics of a forecaster's work and the high level of responsibility associated with this profession, as well as the importance of accuracy and timeliness in making forecasts. To conclude, a quiz was organized for the young guests by specialists from the Service for Meteorologica and Climate Monitoring, Database — Anna Nedobega and Alexander Savitsky . In an interactive format, the students reinforced their newly acquired knowledge and learned about safety procedures during adverse and dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena: thunderstorms, squalls, heavy precipitation, etc. The excursion sparked keen interest among the students and may have inspired some of them to connect their future with hydrometeorology. April 15 – Environmental Knowledge Day
April 15 marks Environmental Knowledge Day – a holiday that originated in 1992 at the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro. It was then that environmental education was recognized as a fundamental condition for the survival and sustainable development of all humanity. Belhydromet , perhaps more than anyone, understands the inseparable connection between humans and nature. Every day, our specialists safeguard the country's environmental security by monitoring the state of the atmosphere, water resources, and soil. The results of our work provide critically important data that allow us to warn of hazardous adverse and dangerous phenomena and make informed decisions to protect the environment. However, Belhydromet's activities are not limited to data collection and analysis. We consider it our duty to actively share our accumulated knowledge with society. Conducting educational events, participating in environmental protection campaigns, and supporting initiatives aimed at improving the environmental literacy of the population – these are all steps toward a more conscious relationship with our planet. After all, the deeper each of us understands the importance of nature conservation, the more effective our joint efforts to protect it will be. Creating the future together: simple steps for everyone Let us strive for a future where clean air, clear water, and healthy soil become an undeniable reality rather than an unattainable dream. And each of us, without leaving home, can contribute to this noble cause. Conscious consumption : opt for reusable bags, travel mugs, and water bottles. Choose products with minimal plastic and the maximum amount of recyclable materials. Give items a second life! Waste sorting : separate waste collection is easy! Start with paper, plastic, and glass by finding out about the nearest collection points. Remember: batteries and light bulbs go only into special containers! Resource conservation : turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, choose a quick shower over a long bath. Save electricity by turning off lights and using LED bulbs; unplug unused appliances. Insulate windows and avoid overheating rooms. Eco-friendly transport : for short distances, choose walking or cycling. Use public transport to reduce the number of cars on the roads. Caring for nature : plant a tree or a flower, even on a balcony! Participate in clean-up days and never leave litter behind. Mindful eating : prefer local and seasonal products, supporting farmers and reducing the "transport footprint." Plan your purchases to minimize food waste. Getting started is simple! Choose 1–2 actions you can manage and make them a habit. Every action of yours matters!

Under the shelter of the frontal clouds of cyclone Rapunzel
Last week, a reorganization of atmospheric processes took place: a long period of sunny anticyclonic weather gave way to cool conditions and rain in Belarus. Thus, starting from the past weekend, the territory of our country came under the influence of cyclonic vortices, whose frontal boundaries brought not only precipitation, wind gusts of up to 22 m/s, and the first thunderstorms of the current season, but also facilitated the influx of cold air from Scandinavia into our region. This morning, after allowing another cold atmospheric front to pass, the territory of the republic found itself in the cold and windy rear sector of cyclone Rapunzel , with its center located over southern Finland. Therefore, in most of the territory, in addition to rain mixed with snow pellets , strong gusty winds are observed. Unsettled weather conditions will persist for the next three days (April 7–9) . The cloudy vortex Rapunzel, moving eastward, will merge with cyclone Quiana , forming a single cyclonic depression, and the republic will continue to be located in its rear sector. Consequently, Belarus will continue to experience windy weather with precipitation. During the daytime of April 7 (Tuesday) , due to the development of cumulonimbus clouds in the southern regions, thunderstorms are possible. As a result of the advection of air masses from northern latitudes, the temperature background will drop and approach March values. Nighttime lows will range from -4°C to +5°C, while daytime highs will fluctuate from +2°C in the north to +10°C in the southwest. At the same time, a tight pressure gradient combined with the development of convective processes will contribute to increased wind with gusts of 15–20 m/s. Due to the expected adverse hydrometeorological phenomenon on April 7 (Tuesday), an orange hazard level has been declared for the southwestern half of the republic . According to preliminary forecasts, on April 10–12 (Friday–Sunday) , the influence of frontal boundaries will weaken, and with rising atmospheric pressure, precipitation will become local and short-lived. At the same time, cold weather will persist, with temperatures generally 1–6°C below the climatic norm. Weak icy conditions will be observed in some areas during the night and morning hours.
