September 16 is the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

Every year on September 16, the world community celebrates the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

This date is timed to coincide with the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. The Protocol became an important step in solving the global environmental problem and united the efforts of many countries to protect the Earth's ozone layer.

The ozone layer is a thin layer in the stratosphere that protects all life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. The destruction of the ozone layer leads to an increase in the amount of ultraviolet light reaching the surface of the planet which can cause skin cancer, cataracts, weakening of the immune system and other negative consequences for human health. In addition, ultraviolet radiation has a negative impact on vegetation, marine life and ecosystems in general.

Republic of Belarus is an active participant in international cooperation in the field of ozone layer protection. The country has joined the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol and fulfills all obligations stipulated in these documents. Projects are being implemented in Belarus to replace ozone-depleting substances with ozone-safe alternatives in various industries.

The theme "Ozone for Life", chosen for International Ozone Layer Day in 2025, is a powerful reminder of the vital role of the ozone layer in supporting life on Earth. It highlights not only the current achievements in restoring the ozone layer, but also the long-term challenges in the field of sustainable development and environmental protection.
This topic focuses on the inextricable link between the ozone layer and the well-being of all living organisms. A healthy ozone layer provides protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation which can cause serious damage to human health, agricultural crops and marine ecosystems.

In 2025, the theme "Ozone for life" calls for further action to reduce emissions of substances that deplete the ozone layer and introduce environmentally friendly technologies. It serves as an incentive to develop innovative solutions aimed at protecting the ozone layer and mitigating the effects of climate change. International cooperation and the exchange of best practices remain key factors in achieving these goals. "Ozone for Life" is not just a slogan, but a call for global responsibility to preserve the ozone layer and create a healthy and sustainable future for all.

On the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer everyone can contribute to the protection of the ozone layer. It is important to be responsible for the use of products containing ozone-depleting substances, to support initiatives for the transition to environmentally friendly technologies and to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer for the preservation of life on Earth. By working together we can protect the ozone layer and ensure a healthy future for future generations!
