Climate characteristics of autumn 2024
The average air temperature for the autumn season of 2024 was 2.5°C above the climatic norm and amounted to +9.5°C. The autumn of this year took the 2nd place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest season starting in 1881.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was mainly in the range from 2.0 to 3.0°C.
In the regional context, the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Mogilev region (an average of 2.8°C in the region), in the Brest region the deviations were the lowest (2.0°C).

The maximum air temperature of the autumn season (+32.0°C) is marked on September 1 at the October station. The minimum air temperature for the season was recorded at the Oshmyany station on November 23 and amounted to -8.8°C.

The average air temperature in Belarus in September 2024 was +17.5°C, which is 4.8°C above the climatic norm. September of this year took the 1st place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest for the entire observation period.
From September 19 to 29 a steady transition of the average daily air temperature through +15°C downward took place throughout the country, which is two to three decades later than the long-term average.
The maximum value for this month (+32.0°C) air temperature reached on the afternoon of September 1 at the October station. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Lyntupy station on September 30 and amounted to +0.8 °C.
In September in most of the territory of the republic the maximum air temperatures reached +27°C, and in the south and southeast they amounted to +28 +30°C and more. During this period prolonged heat waves were recorded throughout the republic. In the central, northern and northeastern parts of the republic, lasting from 9 to 27 days, in the western, southwestern and southeastern parts of the republic, several heat waves were observed from the end of August to September 9 and from September 14 to 27, lasting from 6 to 14 days.
The average air temperature in Belarus in October 2024 was +8.3°C which is 1.5°C above the climatic norm. October of this year took the 9th place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest, since 1945.
A steady downward transition of the average daily air temperature through 10°C (the end of the active vegetation period) took place in the southern half of the republic on October 12-13, this is one to two weeks later than its usual dates, in the northeast of the republic the transition occurred on October 5th which is 8-11 days later. In the north and north-west of the republic the transition occurred at the end of September in terms close to the usual.
The average air temperature in Belarus in November 2024 was +2.6°C, which is 1°C above the climatic norm.
Steady transition of the average daily air temperature through +5° downward movement (the end of the growing season) in most of the country took place in early November, which is later than usual on 4-11 days.
The maximum value (+15.9°C) air temperature reached on November 1 at the Pruzhany station. The minimum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Oshmyany station on November 23 and amounted to -8.8°C.
During the autumn season of 2024 an average of 111 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which is 72% of the climatic norm. Autumn 2024 entered the 20 driest seasons since 1945 taking the 16th place. In most parts of the country 50-75% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell.

In the regional context, the highest amount of precipitation for the season fell in the Vitebsk region – 127 mm or 74% of the climatic norm. The lowest amount was observed in the Grodno and Brest regions – on average, 102 mm and 103 mm fell in each region, or 67% and 73% of the norm, respectively.

Precipitation fell unevenly throughout the season. A significant shortage of moisture was observed in September (47% of the norm fell), in November there was also a shortage of precipitation (74% of the norm fell), and in October about the norm of precipitation fell.

and the climatic norm of 2024 on the territory of Belarus
In September an average of 26 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 47% of the climatic norm. September 2024 ranked the 8th in the ranked series of observations from the driest to the wettest, starting in 1945. In most parts of the country, 40-80% of the precipitation norm fell. The historical monthly minimum rainfall was updated at the stations of Polotsk, Dokshitsy, Mstislavl and Kostyukovichi. Against the background of a shortage of precipitation in the extreme south-west, there was an excess of it. The historical daily maximum precipitation (81 mm) has been updated at Brest station.
In October an average of 51 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 94% of the climatic norm. In most parts of the country, 75-125% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell.
In November an average of 34 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 74% of the climatic norm. Precipitation spread unevenly across the country. There was an increase in precipitation from the southwest to the northeast from 50-75% of the climatic norm to 100-125% of the climatic norm, respectively.
On some days of the season thunderstorms, fogs were observed in places, and icy phenomena at the end of the season. In early autumn the rains were torrential in nature, in places they reached the criterion of a dangerous phenomenon: on September 14 very heavy rain was observed in the area of the meteorological station Brest with 62 mm of precipitation, 53.2 mm fell in the area of the urban settlement Small Radvanichi, 61.5 mm of precipitation fell on the urban settlement Novoselki. In November precipitation turned into a mixed phase and fell in the form of rain, snow and sleet. Throughout November the snow cover was repeatedly installed and destroyed. Usually stable snow cover in most of the territory of the republic falls in the second decade of December. The maximum snow height was 22 cm and was observed on November 23 at the Kostyukovichi station. In the last days of autumn snow cover was almost everywhere absent with the exception of individual stations, where its height ranged from less than 0.5 cm to 8 cm (Mstislavl).
During the season there was an increase in wind speed in gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed (24 m/s) was registered at the stations Slavgorod, Novogrudok (November 2) and Gorki, Klichev (November 4).
