The United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Climate Summit, has been held annually since 1995 and gathers the participating countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The previous summit was held at the end of last year in Dubai (UAE) with the participation of representative delegations from more than 150 countries.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1992 and entered into force in 1994.
Belarus signed the Convention on June 11, 1992, ratified it on May 11, 2000 and became a full party on August 9, 2000. In addition, our country is a party to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, adopted as a follow-up to the convention.
The purpose of the UNFCCC is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic impact on the planet's climate system. At the moment, the Convention has been ratified by 197 States.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the highest body of the UNFCCC which meets annually in a rotating format in a country representing one of the five regional groups of the United Nations, or at the headquarters of the secretariat in Bonn (Germany).
The main expectation from SOR29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Objective (NCQG) related to climate finance.
The COP29 Chairmanship has put forward 14 initiatives that include the relationship between climate action and sustainable development goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate sustainability, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, actions in the field of green digital technologies and other topics. Along with this, the creation of an Action Fund on Climate Finance is envisaged as one of the initiatives.
Azerbaijan attaches special importance to the issues of environmental protection and elimination of the consequences of climate change and carries out important work in this direction. Demonstrating exemplary leadership in such an important global issue as the fight against climate change, Azerbaijan came up with the motto: "Let's stand in solidarity for the sake of a green world!" As President Ilham Aliyev stressed, during COP29, the country will make every effort to create a bridge between developed and developing countries, achieve consensus and turn COP29 into a success story. The year 2024 was declared the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
