September 16 – International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

Today, September 16, 2026, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is being observed.

This important date reminds us of the fragility of our common home – planet Earth – and of the need for joint efforts to preserve its unique atmosphere. This year's theme of the day – "Global Action for Cooling the Planet" – emphasizes how vitally important it is for our well-being and future to maintain the integrity of the ozone layer.

The ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, plays the role of a natural shield, absorbing a significant part of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. Without this natural filter, life on Earth as we know it would be impossible. An increase in UV radiation would lead to a rise in cases of skin cancer, cataracts, suppression of the human immune system, as well as negative consequences for ecosystems – damage to agricultural crops, phytoplankton and marine organisms.
Since the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, aimed at the phased elimination of ozone-depleting substances (ODS), humanity has demonstrated an amazing capacity for collective action. Thanks to these efforts, the ozone layer is gradually recovering, and scientists predict its full recovery by the middle of the 21st century. This is one of the greatest environmental achievements in history.
However, as this year's theme emphasizes, the struggle for the health of the planet is not over. The challenges facing us are multifaceted. Climate warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions also affects the ozone layer and is a global threat. Innovative solutions aimed at reducing emissions, transitioning to renewable energy sources and developing more environmentally friendly technologies – all of this is part of global actions that contribute not only to combating climate change, but ultimately also help the ozone layer.
On this day, Belhydromet calls on every resident of Belarus to recognize their role in preserving the environment. Reducing consumption, responsible attitudes toward waste, choosing environmentally friendly modes of transport, supporting greening initiatives – everyone, even the smallest step, contributes to the common cause.
