On June 5, the Republic of Belarus celebrates Environment Protection Day. This holiday, coinciding with World Environment Day, reminds each of us of the importance of caring for our natural resources and the need for joint efforts to preserve the natural environment.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is timed to coincide with the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. In Belarus, this day has received official status and has become an important event in the country's environmental calendar.
The holiday serves not only as an occasion for special events but also as a platform for discussing pressing environmental issues — from air and water pollution to biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The Republican Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring (Belhydromet) plays a key role in the country's environmental monitoring system. The organization's specialists conduct daily observations of the state of ambient air, surface waters, soils, and the radiation background.
Modern monitoring stations, equipped with high-precision instruments, can detect the slightest changes in environmental components. The data collected by our specialists form the basis for decision-making in the field of ecology, helping to predict risks and respond promptly to threats.
Special attention is paid to monitoring the radiation situation — the legacy of the Chernobyl accident requires constant attention and a professional approach. Furthermore, climate research conducted by Belhydromet contributes to understanding global climate change and developing adaptation measures.
In recent years, large-scale environmental projects have been implemented in the country. Waste recycling technologies are being introduced, and enterprises are being modernized to reduce emissions. Public initiatives also play an important role: clean-up days, tree-planting campaigns, car-free days, and educational events.
State programs aim to improve air quality in cities, clean rivers and lakes, and preserve the unique ecosystems of Belarusian swamps and forests. International cooperation under environmental agreements allows for the exchange of experience and the adoption of best global practices.
Environment Protection Day is a good opportunity to reflect on our own habits.
Simple actions can bring tangible benefits:
- Resource conservation: turn off lights and appliances when not needed, use water wisely.
- Waste separation: sorting waste facilitates recycling and reduces the burden on landfills.
- Respect for nature: do not leave trash in forests or on river and lake shores, avoid using disposable items.
- Participation in environmental campaigns: join clean-up days, tree plantings and other initiatives.
The team of Belhydromet congratulates all citizens of Belarus on Environment Protection Day! We thank scientists, environmentalists, volunteers, and all caring people who work daily to preserve clean air, water, and soil.
May this holiday serve as a reminder that nature is our common home, and caring for it is everyone's duty. Together, we can preserve Belarus's unique natural environment for future generations.
