A new day – new achievements! Day 2 of the Belarusian delegation’s work in the Kyrgyz Republic

Yesterday, the 37th session of the Interstate Council on Hydrometeorology of the CIS concluded, but the Belhydromet delegation is not slowing down – the work continues.

Today, on 10 September 2026, the first day of the International Jubilee Conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of Kyrgyzhydromet was held in Cholpon-Ata (Kyrgyz Republic).

Background. On 18 July 1926, a meteorological bureau was established under the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the Kirghiz ASSR. Although in the early years the stations’ equipment with instruments remained limited, the data collected made a significant contribution to the study of the nature and climate of Kyrgyzstan. Today, Kyrgyzhydromet’s observation network includes 85 automatic stations, of which 34 have parallel observations for validation. The meteorological stations include 5 snow and avalanche stations and a lake observatory in Cholpon-Ata with research vessels. There are 10 agrometeorological and 78 hydrological posts, three of which are equipped with automatic hydrological complexes, five posts are located on lakes, and 23 hydrochemical posts are on rivers and reservoirs. 20 weather stations monitor the radiation situation, of which four determine the radioactivity of atmospheric deposition. Another 15 posts monitor air pollution. (Source: Kyrgyzhydromet. caravan-info.kg.)

As part of the event, a solemn signing took place of the Memorandum of Intent on Cooperation in the Field of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring between the state institution “Republican Centre for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Contamination Control and Environmental Monitoring” and the Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Memorandum opens up new opportunities for the development and strengthening of professional ties between the hydrometeorological services of Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. Data exchange, joint scientific research, and coordination of efforts will make it possible to strengthen scientific, technical, and human resource potential, as well as to improve the effectiveness of hydrometeorological support in both states.

An important event within the framework of the event was also the talks between the Head of Belhydromet, Sergei Khilman, and the President of the World Meteorological Organization, Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous.

During the meeting, the parties discussed access to satellite information, as well as issues of purchasing meteorological equipment. In addition, the Head of Belhydromet noted the significant contribution of the current WMO President to the development of the Organization and expressed readiness to support his candidacy for re-election for a second term (2027–2031) in the elections to be held during the 20th World Meteorological Congress in June 2027 in Geneva.

In turn, Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous sincerely supported Belhydromet’s position on the issues raised and assured that he would approach the WMO Secretary-General, Ms. Celeste Saulo, to provide the necessary assistance.

This concludes the visit of the Belhydromet delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic. Ahead lies joint work to implement the agreements reached.
