On April 14, as part of the implementation of the Action Plan within the system of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, an educational lecture was held for students of a specialized engineering‑oriented class at the educational institution "Gymnasium No. 19 in Minsk."
The event was organized for schoolchildren who are pursuing the curriculum of the elective course "Fundamentals of Rational Nature Management and Protection of Natural Resources."
The topic of the lecture – "The Radiation Monitoring System: From the Chernobyl Accident to the Present Day" – allowed students to delve deeper into issues of radiation safety and learn about the development of radiation monitoring systems in the country.
The speaker was Irina Khorovets, Deputy Head of the Radiation Monitoring Service – Head of the Radiation Monitoring Department at Belhydromet. During her presentation, Irina Grigorievna discussed the historical context and consequences of the Chernobyl accident from the perspective of radioactive contamination, highlighted the evolution of the radiation monitoring system in Belarus – from the first steps after 1986 to modern technologies and methods, explained how radiation monitoring is currently conducted across the country, presented data on the current state of background radiation in various regions, described the tools and equipment used by Belhydromet specialists for measurements and analysis, and answered students' questions about the practical work of the radiation monitoring service and the future prospects of the field.
The lecture not only expanded the students' knowledge of radiation safety but also helped them see the connection between the theoretical foundations of nature management and the real‑world tasks facing modern specialists.
Such events play an important role in environmental education for young people and in fostering a responsible attitude toward the environment. They help students understand the importance of scientific research and monitoring for ensuring public safety and preserving natural resources.
Belhydromet will continue its work in promoting environmental knowledge and interacting with educational institutions of the Republic of Belarus.
