80 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

On May 9, 2025, it will be the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, which lasted 1,418 days and nights.

Victory Day is a holiday earned through hard battles for the freedom and independence of the Motherland. This is a day of remembrance, deep respect and gratitude to all those who brought the Great Victory closer. In Belarus the memory of the Great Patriotic War has been preserved throughout all the post-war years.

In the chronicles of our country there has been no battle more brutal than the Great Patriotic War, there has been no feat more significant than that of the Soviet soldier who defended the Motherand from the enemy and saved humanity from Nazism. The memory of the terrible war and the Great Victory cannot fade away: it is forever inscribed in the history of the Motherand and every Belarusian family. The tragedy experienced and the Victory achieved are an eternal source of pain and bitterness, pride and glory of the Belarusian people.

Belhydromet also contributed to the common cause of Victory. Meteorological observers from individual stations and posts courageously continued to conduct observations during the occupation period – in Gorki, Vasilevichi, Maryina Gorka, Borisov, Gantsevichi and other cities and towns. Meteorological data played an important role for aviation during the war. Accurate weather forecasts made it possible to plan combat operations and ensure flight safety. The selfless work of meteorologists often under enemy fire contributed to achieving Victory.

Today, 80 years later, we bow our heads in memory of the fallen heroes. We remember those who gave their lives for the peaceful sky over our Motherland. It is our duty to preserve the historical truth about the war and pass it on to future generations so that the horrors of those years never happen again. Victory Day is not only a day of mourning but also a day of unity, a day when we feel like we are part of a great nation that defeated fascism.
