Climate characteristics of October 2023

The average air temperature in Belarus for October 2023 was +8.0°C, which is 1.2°C higher than the climatic norm. October of this year took the 11th place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest since 1945.

In most parts of the country there was a positive anomaly of air temperature which was mainly in the range from 0.2 to 1.6°C. A slight negative anomaly was noted in the extreme northeast.
In the regional context the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Brest region (+2.0°C on average in the region), in the Vitebsk region the deviations were the smallest (+0.3°C).

Daytime air temperatures for most of the month were mainly +11 +20°C, on some days falling to +10 +5° with and below. The maximum value (+25.0°C) air temperature reached in the afternoon of October 14 in Drogichin. The air temperature at night was mostly within +6 +11°C, on some days it dropped to +2 +5°C. On the coldest nights the air temperature dropped to negative values in some places. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Bragin station on October 11 and was -5.7°C.
The steady transition of the average daily air temperature through 10°C downward (the end of the active vegetation period) took place 3-13 days later than its usual dates – October 6-8, and only in the extreme south and southwest the transition occurred on October 15-16. On October 19-26 the average daily air temperature in the northern half of the country passed through 5°C.
During the month 83.3 mm of precipitation fell in the republic which amounted to 153% of the climatic norm. October 2023 is ranked the 10th in the ranked series of observations from the wettest to the driest since 1945. In most parts of the country 100-200% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell.

In the regions the most precipitation was recorded in the Gomel and Vitebsk regions – on average 96.4 and 96.2 mm or 174 and 155% of the norm, respectively. Least of all – on the territory of the Brest region – 59.5 mm or 134% of the norm.

In the first decade there was a shortage of precipitation: 13.3 mm or 67% of the norm fell. In the second and third decades there was an excess of precipitation: 18.4 and 51.7 mm of precipitation fell or 120 and 272% of the norm.

Precipitation fell in the form of rains, in some places there was a fall of sleet and snow. On October 26-27, a snow cover with a height of 0.1 to 9 cm was established for a short time in Vitebsk, as well as in the northern part of Minsk and Mogilev regions.
During the month fogs were observed in some parts of the country at night and in the morning, in some places – icy phenomena, thunderstorms and hail. There was an increase in wind speed by gusts up to 15 m/s and more, in some places reaching the criterion of a dangerous hydrometeorological phenomenon (25 m/s and more). The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded at the Slutsk station on October 8 (28 m/s).
