Climate characteristics of March 2025

The first month of spring turned out to be exceptionally warm and, along with March 2007, took 1st place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest since 1945. The average air temperature in Belarus was +5.2°С, which is 4.4°С above the climatic norm.

from the climatic norm (+0.8°С)

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was mainly in the range from 4 to 4.8 °C.
In the regional context the highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Mogilev and Gomel regions (an average is 4.6 °C in each region), in the Vitebsk, Minsk and Brest regions the deviations were the lowest (4.3 °C).

The average air temperature for three decades of the month was above normal. And the highest positive anomaly (6.7 °C) was observed in the first decade of the month. At this time, such weather usually occurs in the first decade of April. The transition of the average daily air temperature through +5° upward took place (the beginning of the growing season) on March 4-6 in the southern half of the country, which is a month earlier than its usual dates. Throughout the rest of the country, this transition occurred on March 24-29, which is a decade and a half earlier than usual.

The daytime temperatures varied greatly. On more than half of the days of the month, the air temperature exceeded +10 °C, and on some days the air warmed up to +15 °C and above, and the maximum value (+20.4 ° C) air temperature reached on the afternoon of March 10 at the Drogichin station. In the entire history of meteorological observations, the air temperature has never risen to such high values in the first decade of March. During periods of cold weather, the air temperature was mainly in the range of +4 +9 ° C, and on the coldest days it didn't exceed -1 +3 ° C.
The nighttime temperatures were even more contrasting, they were mainly negative, and were mostly in the range of -1-8 °C. The minimum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Polesskaya station on March 16 and amounted to -12.0 °C. However, on some days, mainly in the middle of the first decade, the thermometer rose to +5 °С and above.
The average amount of precipitation in the republic was close to the climatic norm. 37 mm of precipitation fell, which amounted to 96% of the climatic norm.  80-110% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell across most of the country.

from the climatic norm on the territory of Belarus

By regions the most precipitation was recorded in the Vitebsk region, with an average of 42 mm or 107% of the norm. The lowest is in the Grodno region – 30 mm or 80% of the norm.

Precipitation spread unevenly throughout the month. A shortage of precipitation was observed in the first decade of the month (26% of the decade norm fell), 120 and 150% of the decadal norm fell in the second and third decades, respectively. The record of the daily maximum precipitation was broken on March 24 at the Lyntupy, Minsk, Volozhin and Polesskaya stations, and the previous record was repeated in Polotsk.

Precipitation fell in the form of rain, sometimes sleet and snow. During the month, snow cover was absent, and it was only established for a short time at the beginning of the first and at the end of the second decade in most of the country.
Icy phenomena and fogs were observed throughout the month. A thunderstorm with hail up to 6 mm in diameter was observed on March 5 at the Vitebsk station. A thunderstorm with hail up to 3 mm in diameter was observed on March 12 at the Zhitkovichi station. Hail in March is an exceptionally rare phenomenon, and it has been registered in Vitebsk and Zhitkovichi for the first time.
In the entire history of meteorological observations, there have been only isolated cases of hail at some observation points. There was an increase in wind speed with gusts of up to 15 m/s or more in some places. The maximum wind speed (22 m/s) was registered on March 24 at the Gorki station.
