Climate characteristics of February 2024

The average air temperature in Belarus in February was +1.7°C, which is 5.2°C above the climatic norm. February of this year took the 2nd place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest, since 1945.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was mainly in the range of +4.5 to +6.0°C.
In the regional context, the greatest positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Brest region (+6.1°C), the smallest – in Mogilev (+4.6°C).

The average air temperature for three decades of the month was above normal. The third decade was especially warm with a positive anomaly of +7.3°C.

The air temperature during the day was mainly in the range of +2 + 0°C, on some days falling to negative values, and on the warmest day in the third decade of the month it rose to +11 +16° C. The maximum air temperature for the month was recorded at Brest station on February 27 and amounted to +16.1°C.
The air temperature at night during the month was mostly in the range of -9 + 5°C, and on the coldest nights, at the end of the first and second decades, it dropped to -10°C and below. The minimum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Kostyukovichi station on February 9 and amounted to -15.2°C.

During the month, an average of 64 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 171% of the climatic norm. February 2024 took the 2nd place in the ranked series of observations from the wettest to the driest, starting in 1945. Precipitation spread unevenly across the country. In most parts of the country, 100-200% of the climatic norm of precipitation fell. In the west and extreme south-west of the country more than 220% of the precipitation norm fell. Historical monthly precipitation maximums were exceeded at individual observation points. The historical daily maximum of precipitation has been updated at the Naroch station.
By region, the most precipitation was observed in the Grodno region – on average 85 mm or 220% of the norm. The smallest is in the Brest and Gomel regions – 57 mm or 168 and 149% of the norm, respectively.

Precipitation fell in the form of snow, sleet and rain. During the month snow cover was stable throughout most of the country, with the exception of the western and southern regions where snow cover was repeatedly formed and destroyed. By the end of the month, as a result of the predominance of daytime positive air temperatures and frequent precipitation of liquid precipitation, snow cover was absent almost everywhere, with the exception of individual observation points, where the height of the snow cover ranged from less than 0.5 cm (Naroch) to 5 cm (Mstislavl).
Icy phenomena and fogs were observed throughout the month. On February 4, a snowstorm was observed at Vitebsk station, and on February 5, hail with a diameter of 11 mm was observed at Brest station. A thunderstorm was registered at Mstislavl station on February 4 and 7. In some places, there was an increase in wind speed with gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed was recorded at the Slutsk station on February 5 (22 m/s).
