Climate characteristic of summer, 2022

The national average air temperature for the summer season of 2022 was +19.4°C, which is 1.4 °C above the climatic norm. The summer of 2022 took the 3rd place in the ranked series of observations from the warmest to the coldest season since 1881. The positive anomaly spread throughout the country, reaching the highest values in the Mogilev region (1.6°C).

For the most part of the country, the positive anomaly of seasonal air temperature was in the range of 1.0-2.5°C.

Over the past summer, there were from 31 to 61 hot days (with a temperature of +25°C and above) with a norm of 29-59 days and from 2 to 26 very hot days (with a temperature of +30°C and above) with a norm of 1-13 days.

The maximum air temperature of the summer season (+34.3°C) was recorded on June 28 at the Lelchitsy station. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on June 1 and amounted to +3.7°C.

The temperature regime of summer was heterogeneous. June and August were very warm, July was a little colder than usual.

The average air temperature in Belarus for June 2022 was +19.0°C, which is 2.0°C higher than the climatic norm. June of this year entered the 10 warmest first summer months, taking 7th place. The average air temperature of all three decades was above normal. The third decade turned out to be very hot with a positive anomaly of 3.7 ° C, respectively. 

From May 31 to June 6, a steady transition of the average daily air temperature through +14°C upward (the beginning of the climatic summer) took place throughout the country.
 
In late June – early July (from June 24 to July 5), an intense heat wave was observed. In June, it was also noted from 1 to 9 days with a maximum air temperature of +30°C or more, with a norm for this month of 1-3 days. On some days of the third decade, tropical nights were recorded mainly in the south of the country (the minimum air temperature per night was +20°C or more). 

The maximum value (+34.3°C) air temperature reached on June 28 at the station Lelchitsy. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on June 1 and amounted to +3.7°C.
The average air temperature in Belarus for July 2022 was +18.4°C, which is 0.5°C below the climatic norm.  

The first decade of the month was very warm with a positive anomaly of 1.8°C. The average air temperature of the second and third decades was below normal by 2.8 and 0.6°C, respectively. The maximum value (+33.3°C) air temperature reached on July 1 at the Brest and Vysokoe stations. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Polesskaya station on July 29 and was +4.6°C.

The average air temperature in Belarus for August 2022 was +20.8°C, which is 2.8°C higher than the climatic norm. August of this year repeated the record of the last summer month of 2010, which became the warmest in the history of meteorological observations. 

The average air temperature for the first decade was close to normal (0.1°C above the climatic norm) and averaged +19.5°C. The second and third decades were very warm with a positive anomaly of air temperature equal to 3.7 and 4.6°C, respectively. From August 12 to August 30, an intense heat wave was observed on the territory of the country. At this time, for 3-15 days, the maximum air temperature during the day was +30°C and above, but despite a long period with very hot weather, the historical maximum air temperatures were not exceeded. On some days, tropical nights were recorded at many stations. The maximum value (+34.2°C) air temperature reached on August 24 at the Lelchitsy station. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on August 8 and amounted to +6.2°C.

During the summer season of 2022, an average of 193 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which is 86% of the climatic norm. Humidification conditions were heterogeneous across the country. For the most part, 60-120% of the seasonal norm fell.

In the regional context, the highest amount of precipitation for the season fell in the Grodno region – 235 mm or 106% of the climatic norm. There was a lack of moisture throughout the rest of the territory, and the least amount of precipitation fell in the Gomel region – 151 mm or 67% of the climatic norm.

Throughout the season, precipitation fell unevenly.

In June, an average of 65.5 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 91% of the climatic norm. On the territory of the country, the humidification conditions were heterogeneous: for the most part, 60-140% of the norm fell. According to individual observation points on the territory of the Brest and Gomel regions, half of the precipitation norm fell in a month or less. In July, an average of 104.4 mm of precipitation fell across the republic, which amounted to 117% of the climatic norm and humidification conditions were extremely heterogeneous: 70-120% of the norm fell across most of the country. According to individual observation points on the territory of the Brest, Grodno and Vitebsk regions, 150% of the precipitation norm for a month or more was noted. In August, an average of 23.3 mm of precipitation fell across the republic, which was 37% of the climatic norm. Throughout the country, with the exception of individual observation points, there was a significant shortage of precipitation: from 7 to 65% of the norm was recorded. Only in the extreme southwest, more than the norm of precipitation fell in a month. August 2022 was the 4th driest last summer month since 1945. In Volozhin, a historical minimum of precipitation has been recorded for the last more than 70 years: an average of 5.1 mm or 7% of the norm fell per month. The previous minimum at this station was recorded in 1973.

Summer rains were mainly of a torrential nature, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
During the summer season, wind gusts of up to 15 m/s and more were observed in some areas, and in some places the wind speed reached the criterion of a dangerous phenomenon. The maximum wind speed was registered at the Bragin station on June 29 (28 m/s). On some days, fogs were observed in places at night and in the morning.
