Climate characteristic of September 2020

On average in the Republic of Belarus, the average monthly air temperature in September was +14.8°C, which is 2.7°C higher than the climatic norm. The first month of autumn 2020 became the second after 2018 in the ranked range from the warmest to the coldest September in the history of meteorological observations.

The above zero temperature anomaly spread throughout Belarus. The greatest values of the deviation of air temperature from the climatic norm were reached in the Gomel oblast and average +3.1°С in oblast, in the Minsk oblast they were the smallest on average +2.5°С in oblast. The average air temperature in all three decades of the month was above normal, the greatest positive deviations were noted in the third decade (4.3°C).

On the warmest days, the air temperature rose up to +20 +25°С and higher. The absolute maximum air temperature for September was recorded on September 2 in Bragin with amount of +32.8°С. On the coldest nights, the air temperature in places dropped to negative values. The absolute minimum air temperature for the month was noted in Bobruisk on September 21 (-0.7°С). In September, on average 37.2 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus (62% of the climatic norm). Precipitation spread unevenly throughout Belarus. The largest amount of precipitation fell in Mogilev oblast - 48.2 mm or 83% of the climatic norm, the lowest was noted in the Grodno oblast - 20.1 mm or 32% of the norm.

Precipitation fell in the form of rains, in the first decade, more than half of the total precipitation fell for September. The second and third decades were distinguished by a significant lack of precipitation. The maximum daily amount of precipitation was noted at Vitebsk station on September 17 (27.0 mm).

In some places the rains were accompanied by thunderstorms and increased winds up to 15-20 m/s and higher. The maximum wind speed (25 m/s), which reached the criterion of a dangerous event, was registered at the CAWS Grodno on September 17. Fogs were observed in some areas at night and in the morning.
