Climate characteristic of October 2020

The average air temperature in Belarus in October 2020 was + 10.5°C, which is 3.8°C higher than the climatic norm. October 2020 is the warmest since 1945. Before that, October 1967 was the warmest with an average temperature of +9.7°C. A positive temperature anomaly has spread throughout the country. The highest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were observed in the Gomel region (+4.1°C).

The average air temperature in all three decades was above normal. The warmest were the first and third decades with a positive anomaly of the ten-day temperature equal to 5.4°С and 4.6°С, respectively. The second decade was 1.4°C warmer than usual.

On the warmest day, daytime temperatures exceeded the 15-degree mark. The maximum air temperature reached on October 4 at Brest station and amounted to + 24.4°С. Despite the high average air temperature in October, the absolute maximum temperatures were not exceeded.
Nighttime temperatures for most of the month were in the range of +5 +10°С, in the coldest nights they dropped to negative values. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Yezerishche station on October 21 and amounted to -2.7°С.
In October, the national average was 57.1 mm of precipitation (114% of the climatic norm). Precipitation fell unevenly throughout the country. The most humid was the Mogilev region, where 80.4 mm or 146% of the norm fell per month. The least precipitation fell on the territory of Grodno region is 41.9 mm or 89% of the climatic norm.

The first and second decades of October were rainy: 117 and 150% of the ten-day rainfall fell, respectively. In the third decade, there was a shortage of precipitation: on average, 12 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 74% of the climatic norm for a decade.

Precipitation fell in the form of rains. On some days of the month, the wind increased in places up to 15 m/s and above, its maximum value (19 m/s) was recorded on October 1 in Novogrudok. On October 18, in some places in the North-East of the country, the formation of an unstable snow cover up to 4 cm high was noted. Fogs thickened in places at night and in the morning.
