Climate characteristic of May 2021

In May, the national average air temperature was 12.3°C, which is 1.1°C lower than the climatic norm. This and colder May is celebrated on average throughout the country once every 2-4 years, and the last time in 2020. The negative anomaly spread throughout Belarus, reaching the highest negative values in Grodno and Minsk regions on average -1.4°С for each region. The smallest negative deviations of temperature from theclimatic norm were noted in the Mogilev region (on average in the region -0.5°C).

For three decades, the temperature regime was heterogeneous. The average air temperature in the first decade was 2.6°C below the norm, in the second decade it was slightly above the norm (by 0.7°C), the third decade was 1.3°C colder than usual. Daytime temperatures for most of the month generally exceeded the 15-degree mark, and on the warmest days, the air temperature rose to +20°C and higher. The maximum air temperature was recorded at the Kostyukovichi station on May 17 and amounted to +28.2°С.

Nighttime air temperatures were mainly within +5 + 14°С, and during cold snaps they dropped to 0 -2°С. The lowest air temperature for the month (-2.1°С) was recorded at Lyntupy station on May 9. In May, on average, 98.6 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which amounted to 167% of the climatic norm. May of the current year took the fourth place in terms of the amount of precipitation in the ranked series of observations from the wettest to the driest month. The largest amount of precipitation was noted in the Minsk, Vitebsk and Grodno regions (110.3-111.7 mm), the least - in the Brest, Gomel and Mogilev regions (85.2-88.1 mm). At some observation points across the country, 2-2.5 rainfall rates per month fell. Fogs, thunderstorms, sometimes accompanied by hail, were noted in some areas throughout the month. In May, 1-9 days were noted with wind speed in gusts of up to 15 m/s and more. The maximum wind speed for the month was recorded on May 6 at Volozhin station (23 m/s).
