Climate characteristic of March, 2023

The average air temperature in Belarus in March 2023 was +2.7°C, which is 1.9°C higher than the climatic norm. The current month has been ranked 10th in a ranked series of observations from warmest to coldest since 1945.

The positive air temperature anomaly spread throughout the country and was mainly in the range from 1.5 to 2.5°C. The smallest positive anomalies were noted in the far north of the country and amounted to 1.0°C or less.
In the regional context, the largest values of positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm were noted in the Grodno and Gomel regions (average for the regions +2.1°С), in the Vitebsk region the deviations were the smallest (+1.6°С).

The average temperature of the first decade was equal to the norm. The second and third decades were warm with a positive anomaly of 2.2°C and 3.4°C, respectively.

The daytime air temperature in the first and early second decades was mainly -3 +6°C, the rest of the month the air temperature was within +7 +18°C. The air temperature has reached its maximum value on March 24 at the stations Lelchitsy and Bragin and was +19.2°C.
The air temperature at night during the month was mainly in the range of -1 -10°C. On the coldest nights, the air temperature in some places dropped to -15°C and lower, and on the warmest days, mainly in the third decade, it was +1 +10°C. The minimum air temperature was recorded at Ezerishche station on March 10 and amounted to -23.7°C.

During the month, an average of 69.6 mm of precipitation fell in the republic, which amounted to 184% of the climatic norm. March 2023 was ranked the 3rd in a ranked series of observations from the wettest to the driest since 1945. Most of the country's territory received 100-200% of the climatic norm of precipitation. In the north and the extreme east of the country, 250% of the norm and more fell out. And only in the extreme southwest (Vysokoye station) the amount of precipitation for the month was below the norm.
By regions, the most precipitation was recorded on the territory of the Vitebsk region – an average of 83.9 mm or 216% of the norm. Least of all – in the territory of the Grodno region – 47.5 mm or 125% of the norm. The historical maximum amount of precipitation for the month was exceeded at the stations Ezerishche, Vitebsk, Lepel, Senno, Kostyukovichi and Mozyr. New record values of daily precipitation maxima were set at separate observation points across the territory of Vitebsk, Minsk, Mogilev and Gomel regions.

Precipitation fell in the form of snow, sleet and rain. During the month, the snow cover was repeatedly established for a short time and collapsed. The height of the snow cover on the last day of the month ranged from 0.1 cm (Mozyr, Zhitkovichi, Slutsk) to 21 cm (Ezerishche). There was no snow cover in the west, south, in places in the central part and in the east of the country.
During the month, fogs were observed, in some places – ice and blizzards. Thunderstorms were observed in some areas. On March 26, hail 3 mm in diameter was noted at Vileyka station. In places, an increase in wind speed was noted with gusts up to 15 m/s or more. The maximum wind speed was recorded on March 4 at Oshmyany station and amounted to 22 m/s.
