Climate characteristic of January 2021

The average air temperature in the Republic of Belarus in January 2021 was -4.1°C, which is 0.3°C higher than the climatic norm. In a ranked series of observations from warmest to coldest, January 2021 ranks 41st since 1881.

Positive deviations of air temperature from the climatic norm ranged from 0.1°С in the Grodno region to 0.6°С in the Gomel region.
Throughout January, the average daily air temperatures were mainly in the range of -6 +5°С, and on the coldest day of the month they dropped to -10 -15°С and below.
The absolute maximum air temperature for the month was noted on January 23 at the Lelchitsy and Zhitkovichi stations and amounted to +10.4°С, the absolute minimum was on January 17 at the Slutsk station and amounted to -28.7°С.
The temperature regime was heterogeneous throughout the month. The first and third decades were very warm with the average air temperature 3.8°C and 4.0°C above the norm, respectively. The second decade was very cold with the air temperature 7.0°C below normal.

During the month, on average, 73.2 mm of precipitation fell in Belarus, which is 183% of the climatic norm for the month. Throughout the country, 1.5-2 rainfall rates fell in a month. The largest number of them was noted on the territory of the Minsk region - an average of 87.2 mm in the region (208% of the climatic norm).

Precipitation fell in the form of rain, snow and sleet. The maximum daily precipitation (32 mm) was recorded in Minsk on January 26. The height of the snow cover on the last day of the month ranged from 5 to 44 cm.
On some days, fogs, snowstorms, icy-rime phenomena were observed in places, icy conditions on the roads, an increase in wind up to 15 m/s and higher was noted. The maximum wind speed (19 m/s) was recorded at the Gomel meteorological station on January 27.
