January 2025 warmest on record in Belarus

MINSK, 5 February (BelTA) - January 2025 was the warmest January in the history of meteorological observations in Belarus, BelTA learned from the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Contamination Control, and Environmental Monitoring (Belhydromet) at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus.

"January is considered the coldest month of a year. But this year the monthly temperature averaged +1.2°C, which was close to the temperatures of March. It was 5.3 degrees above the climatic norm. This is the warmest January on record in Belarus. Before that, Belarus witnessed the temperature record in January 2020 with the air temperature averaging +1.1°C," Belhydromet said.

"All three ten-day periods of the month were warm. The warmest was the third decade with an average temperature of 8 degrees above the norm. Temperatures of the first and second ten-day periods exceeded the norm by 4.4 and 3.4 degrees, respectively," the climatologists noted.

The air temperature during the daytime ranged from just below zero to just above zero. On the warmest days, the temperature went above +10°C. The highest air temperature for the month was recorded at the Pinsk station on 27 January with the mercury rising to +12.8°C. The all-time high air temperature was recorded at the Zhlobin station, with a reading of +10.1°C.

During the nighttime, the air temperatures were -2-7°C for most of the month. The lowest temperature of -0.6°C was recorded at the Zhitkovichi station on 6 January. However, there were some nights when temperatures were above zero.

Belhydromet reported that the average monthly precipitation in the country was 3 mm, which accounted for 75% of the norm. The entire territory of the country experienced a lack of precipitation, except for some northern regions. Vitebsk Oblast witnessed the highest level of precipitation, while Gomel Oblast - the lowest.
