New automatic meteorological station begins operation in Shumilino

On 27 October 2026, a new automatic meteorological station (AMS) was officially opened in the urban settlement of Shumilino.

The opening of the station was another step in the implementation of the State Investment Programme to expand the hydrometeorological observation network in the Republic of Belarus. This is the second station in the Vitebsk Region to operate fully automatically without personnel (the first was installed in the urban settlement of Rossony).

The station makes it possible to record meteorological parameters such as air temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind characteristics and precipitation amounts in real time, with subsequent automatic transmission of the data to Belhydromet.
In today's realities, timely hydrometeorological support plays a key role in the sustainable socio-economic development of the region. Data on the state of the environment are critically important for the operation of the agro-industrial complex, housing and communal services, transport infrastructure, as well as for the work of emergency response units.
The introduction of modern equipment will make it possible to:
- improve the quality of meteorological forecasts;
- increase the lead time for detecting adverse and hazardous hydrometeorological phenomena;
- minimise possible risks and material damage for the population and organisations of the region.

As part of further plans for the development of the network, the construction of similar stations is envisaged in the Liozno and Glubokoye districts, which will make it possible to create an even more effective system of meteorological monitoring in the Vitebsk Region.
