The record-breaking heat wave that has engulfed Western Europe will soon reach regions of Belarus as well. While today (June 25) still features comfortable summer weather with daytime temperatures of +21 +27°C, and up to +28 +30°C in the southwest, on June 26-27 (Friday-Saturday) an air mass of tropical origin will begin to flow into the country, starting from the western regions. Nighttime minimums will range from +8°C to +17°C, while daytime maximums will vary from +21°C in the east and northeast to +33°C in the west. Due to the adverse hydrometeorological phenomenon (extreme heat), an orange hazard level has been declared for Friday and Saturday in the western part of the country.
The peak of the heat will occur on June 28-30 (Sunday-Tuesday), when, due to continued advection of very warm air, a positive temperature anomaly will establish itself everywhere and amount to 3-11°C. Daytime thermometer readings will range from +26°C to +34°C, and in the western and southern regions of the country they will reach +35 +38°C. Alongside very high daytime temperatures, nighttime air temperatures over a significant part of the republic will not drop below +20°C (tropical nights).
On July 1 (Wednesday), with the arrival of fresher air masses from northwestern Europe, the temperature background will drop slightly, with daytime values of +23 +30°C, and only in the south will the air warm up locally to +33°C.
At the same time, under the prevailing influence of a high-pressure area, little precipitation is expected; only in isolated regions of the country, due to the movement of frontal boundaries and in unstable air, will cumulonimbus clouds form, bringing brief showers. With active atmospheric development, showers will locally be accompanied by thunderstorms, and on June 29-30 (Monday-Tuesday) – also by strong gusty winds.
Given the sizzling summer weather, do not forget the basic rules of behavior in the heat: try to choose morning or evening hours for walks; if you absolutely must be outside during the period of maximum heating, wear a hat and take a bottle of water with you. People with cardiovascular diseases should be especially cautious and remember to bring the necessary medications.
Meanwhile, the water temperature in most rivers and reservoirs, which has currently reached comfortable values and ranges from +16°C to +26°C, will continue to rise. Therefore, when heading to water bodies, be attentive and cautious, and swim only in designated and equipped areas.
Furthermore, such anomalously hot weather may result in the daytime temperature record for June – +37.1°C, set on June 23, 2021 at the Oktyabr weather station – being broken in the near future.
