A new meeting on the meteorological agenda: delegation of the National Meteorological Office of Algeria and Russian partners visit Belhydromet!

On June 30, Belhydromet hosted a working visit from a delegation of the National Meteorological Office of Algeria, as well as representatives of PJSC "NPO Almaz" named after Academician A.A. Raspletin and LLC "Institute of Radar Meteorology."

The Belarusian side was represented at the meeting by Tatsiana Chаtyrka, First Deputy Head of Belhydromet, together with Belhydromet staff. Additionally, the event was attended by Dmitry Melekh, Deputy Head of the Department for Regulation of Impacts on Atmospheric Air, Climate Change and Expertise of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

At the beginning of her speech, Tatsiana Chаtyrka emphasized:

Belarus, Algeria, and Russia are united by a high level of political dialogue, and we are ready to contribute to the development of multilateral cooperation and share our experience in the field of meteorology.

The First Deputy Head of Belhydromet familiarized the foreign colleagues with all areas of Belhydromet's activities, the structure and modern capabilities of the Belarusian observation network, as well as the use of radar data in the operational work of the hydrometeorological service specialists of the Republic of Belarus, and the software products used for their processing and analysis.

For reference. Belhydromet places special emphasis on the quality and accuracy of data. Over the past several years, the observation network has undergone large-scale modernization. Today, the network of surface meteorological stations is fully automated and comprises 73 stations, 9 of which operate in the city of Minsk. In addition, in 2025, 8 automatic precipitation sensors were installed in regional centers and Minsk to improve local monitoring and minimize the risks of flooding caused by heavy rainfall in large cities.

Alexander Lyalyushkin, Deputy Director for Meteorological Radar at LLC "Institute of Radar Meteorology," demonstrated to the guests the main technical capabilities of the digital platform "MeteoCube," including new tools for visualizing meteorological parameters.

For reference. In order to improve the data exchange system for meteorological radar observations between Belhydromet and Roshydromet, a data transmission scheme has been developed. Special software has been created to collect, process, and prepare combined radar maps using information from Russian and Belarusian DMRL (Doppler Meteorological Radar Locators). As a result, a unified radar field of the two countries is generated in near-real-time mode (updated once every 10 minutes) on a common cartographic basis.

In turn, the representatives of the Algerian delegation spoke about the structure of the National Meteorological Office of Algeria, its main areas of activity, and the software products developed and used by them. As noted by Director General Ihadaden Brahim and Operations Director Said Ahmed Hammadi, their service issues daily, weekly, and seasonal forecasts that serve as a basis for planning in agriculture, construction, and other sectors. Special attention is given to the hazardous weather warning system: depending on the threat level, a yellow, orange, or red risk level is declared, and information is promptly disseminated through the media, radio, SMS, and broadcast in real time via the Internet, which allows for effective delivery to consumers and minimization of possible economic losses.

Also, Igor Birulya, Head of the Communications and Telecommunications Service, demonstrated the functional capabilities of the Belhydromet meteorological data collection and processing center.

The meeting with the Algerian and Russian colleagues took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Today, July 1, as part of the business program, the guests, together with Evgeny Maevsky, Chief Engineer of Belhydromet, and Andrey Petrochenko, Head of the Aviation Meteorological Support Service, will visit the DMRL Minsk, located near Minsk National Airport.
