Climatic characteristics of the summer season of 2026

For the summer season of 2026, the average air temperature in the country was +18.3°C, which is 0.3°C above the climatic norm. Such and warmer summers during the warming period that began in the late 1980s are recorded approximately every 2-3 years.

Deviation of the average air temperature for the summer season
from the climatic norm across the territory of Belarus for the period 1991-2026

A positive air temperature anomaly was observed across the entire territory of the country, ranging from 0.1 to 0.8°C. Only at the Gorki station was a slight negative anomaly recorded (0.1°C).

In terms of regions, the highest values of positive air temperature anomalies were recorded in the Brest and Gomel regions (0.5°C on average for each region), and the lowest – in the territory of the Minsk region (0.1°C).

Deviation (°C) of the average air temperature for the summer season
from the climatic norm across the territory of Belarus

Over the past summer, there were from 22 to 50 hot days (with air temperature +25°C and above) against a norm of 29-59 days, and from 2 to 19 very hot days (with air temperature +30°C and above) against a norm of 1-13 days; for the first time in the entire period of meteorological observations, 2 days with a record high air temperature of +40°C and above were recorded.

During the day on 29 June, a national record for maximum air temperature (+40.4°C) was registered at the Pinsk station; on 6 August, the air temperature at the Mozyr station reached +40.3°C. The previous national temperature record was registered at the Gomel station on 8 August 2010, when the air temperature was +38.9°C.

The minimum air temperature for the summer was recorded at the Polesskaya station on 1 June and amounted to +0.1°C.

Throughout the summer season, several heat waves were observed across the territory of Belarus; during these periods, hot weather was observed throughout the entire country. The most intense heat wave was recorded during the period from 26 June to 1 July, when the average daily air temperature was mainly +20 to +25°C (3-5°C above the long-term average temperature), and in the territory of the Brest and Grodno regions on 28 and 29 June, at some stations the average daily air temperature reached +27 to +31°C.

The temperature regime of the summer season was heterogeneous: the average temperature of June and August was above the norm by 1.3°C and 0.4°C, respectively. July had a negative anomaly equal to 0.7°C.

Average air temperature by months of summer 2026 and
climatic norm across the territory of Belarus

The average air temperature in Belarus for the first summer month of 2026 was +18.3°C, which is 1.3°C above the climatic norm.

The temperature regime of the month was heterogeneous; the weather was characterised by instability and anomalously hot temperatures. The third ten-day period of the month turned out to be exceptionally hot, when on the hottest days the temperature rose to +30°C and above, and on 28-30 June in places exceeded the 35-degree mark, which corresponds to the criterion of a dangerous hydrometeorological phenomenon. On 29 June, the air temperature at the Pinsk station reached +40.4°C. At all stations of the Brest and Grodno regions, as well as at individual stations of the Minsk and Gomel regions, absolute maximum air temperatures were broken both for June and for the summer as a whole over the entire history of meteorological observations. The minimum air temperature for June was recorded at the Polesskaya station on 1 June and amounted to +0.1°C.

The average air temperature in Belarus for July 2026 was +18.2°C, which is 0.7°C below the climatic norm. At the same time, on the hottest days the temperature rose to +30°C and above. In the south-western regions, at the beginning of the month, the heat reached the criterion of a dangerous phenomenon (+35°C and above). The maximum air temperature (+37.1°C) was recorded during the day on 1 July at the Kobrin station. At the Ivacevichi and Pruzhany stations, the maximum air temperature for July was broken – +36.1°C at both stations (previous record +35.6°C in 2001 – Ivacevichi, +36.0°C in 1994 – Pruzhany).

The minimum air temperature for the month was recorded at the Bragin station on 18 July and amounted to +6.0°C.

The average air temperature in Belarus for August 2026 was +18.4°C, which is 0.4°C above the climatic norm. The maximum value (+40.3°C) was reached during the day on 6 August at the Mozyr station. At individual stations of the Brest and Gomel regions, monthly air temperature records were broken, as well as records for the summer season. The minimum air temperature was recorded at the Polesskaya station on 26 August and amounted to +2.6°C.

For the summer season of 2026, on average across Belarus, 214 mm of precipitation fell, which constitutes 95% of the climatic norm. Over most of the territory, 75-125% of the seasonal precipitation norm fell.

Deviation (%) of the precipitation total for the summer season
from the climatic norm across the territory of Belarus

In terms of regions, the greatest amount of precipitation for the season fell in the Grodno region – 264 mm, or 119% of the climatic norm. The least amount of precipitation fell in the Gomel region – 158 mm, or 70% of the climatic norm.

Precipitation amount for summer 2026 and climatic norm
by regions and across the territory of Belarus

Throughout the summer season, precipitation across the territory of Belarus was distributed unevenly; periods with both a deficit of precipitation and excessive moisture were observed.

Precipitation amount by months of summer 2026 and
climatic norm across the territory of Belarus

In June, on average across the republic, 66 mm of precipitation fell, which constituted 92% of the climatic norm. In July, on average across the republic, 96 mm of precipitation fell, which constituted 107% of the climatic norm. In August, on average across the republic, 52 mm of precipitation fell, which constituted 82% of the climatic norm.

Throughout the season, fogs and thunderstorms were observed, and hail was recorded, in places reaching the criterion of a dangerous hydrometeorological phenomenon (20 mm and more). On 12 June, hail up to 32 mm in diameter was recorded at the Mstislavl MS. The rains were predominantly of a showery nature, in places heavy, and in some places the amount of precipitation reached the criteria of a dangerous phenomenon. Thus, on 7 June in the area of the Gorodishche GP, a very heavy downpour with a precipitation amount of 84 mm was registered; on 8 June, very heavy rain was recorded according to the Chernichi GP with a precipitation amount of 71.4 mm, according to the Naroch GP – 65.8 mm, according to the Slutsk MS – 51.8 mm; on 1 July in the area of the Volozhin MS, a very heavy downpour with a precipitation amount of 35 mm was observed, as well as on 11 July in the area of the Gorki AS with a precipitation amount of 31 mm; on 18 August at the Svisloch AMS, very heavy rain with a precipitation amount of 57.3 mm was registered. There was an increase in wind speed with gusts up to 15 m/s and more, including squalls, in places reaching the criterion of a dangerous hydrometeorological phenomenon (25 m/s and more). The maximum wind speed for the summer season was registered at the Soligorsk AMS on 13 July and amounted to 34 m/s; also at the Ivye AMS and Vileyka MS on 7 August, very strong wind was observed with speeds of 29 and 27 m/s, respectively.
