Over most of the republic's territory, a deep snow cover remains in the fields. According to snow survey data, snow depth is generally 30–40 cm, and in some areas of the eastern half of the country, it is about 45 cm. In the west of the republic, the snow cover is lower – 15–25 cm.
Soil freezing is predominantly shallow; however, in a large part of the western half and in the far east of the republic, the depth of soil freezing has slightly increased and reached 20–33 cm. The soil temperature at the depth of the tillering node of winter grain crops remains above optimal values, and is close to normal only in some southwestern regions.
In the coming days, under the influence of thawing weather, the snow cover will become more compact. The cooling expected at the beginning of next week will not pose a threat to winter crops.
