Climate characteristic of summer 2018

   
Average air temperature was +18,9 °С in summer, that is 1,6°С above climate normal. 
 
The deviation of the summer average air temperature from the climate normal (+17, 3ºС) across the territory of Belarus

From 32 to 62 hot days (maximum air temperature +25°С and higher) were registered in summer at the rate of 28-60 days. The amount of very hot days (maximum air temperature +30°С and higher) was from 1 to 14 this year, but normal is considered to be  from 3 to 15 days  with the same temperature.

Average air temperature of all the summer months was above climate normal. 
Average temperature in June was +17,6°С, that is 1,2°С above climate normal.  Daily air temperature increased up to +25°С and higher on certain days, in certain south regions of the country - up to +30°С and higher. Maximum value (+31,3°С) was registered on June, 21 in Brest. Air temperature was +10 - +15°С at most of the nights in June, however, it fell out up to 0 - +5°С during short-term periods.  Minimum air temperature value (-0,2°С) was registered at the swamp station Polesskaya on June, 7, that is minimum air temperature for all the summer period. Soft freezing was registered on the soil surface that night. Freezing around soil surface at a height 2 cm spread on large territory. They were observed mainly in central and south areas, their intensity fluctuated from 0 to -3°С.
Average air temperature in July was +19,6°С across the country, that is 1,2°С above climate normal. Air temperature was about +16 +24°С in first decade of month, it increased up to +25+28°С later and up to +30°С and higher in the end of the third decade. Maximum air temperature (+32,1°С) was registered in Stolbtsy on July, 29. Air temperature was about +17+19°С at night in July, however it decreased on less than +10°С. Minimum air temperature (+7,1°С) was registered in Bragin on July, 2. 
Average air temperature was +19,6°С across Belarus in August, that is 2,3°С above climate normal. Daily air temperature often increased up to +25°С, on certain days – up to +30°С and higher. Maximum air temperature (+32,6°С) was registered in Volkovysk and Pinsk, that was maximum for all summer period. Air temperature was about +11- +18°С at nights in August,  however it decreased up to +10°С and less. Minimum air temperature (+2,3°С) was registered in Biosphere Reserve Berezinsky on August, 23.   
 
The amount of precipitation in summer 2018 and the climate normal across the regions and the territory of Belarus
242 mm of precipitation fell out on average in summer, that is 104% above climate normal. Deficit of precipitations was registered (93% of climate normal in each region) in Brest, Grodno and Vitebsk regions. Sufficient amount of precipitations was registered in Minsk, Gomel and Mogilev regions, that is a little bit above climate normal.
Wet and dry periods were registered this summer in Belarus. 
June and August were characterized by the deficit of precipitations across the whole territory of Belarus: 53 mm of precipitations on average across the country, (65% of climate normal), in August– 41 mm (61% of climate normal). 
148 mm of precipitations or 174% of climate normal fell out in July. 80 mm of precipitations fell out in Kostukovichi on July, 22 and daily limit was covered. New record of July was set in Zhitkovichi. 241 mm of precipitation fell out. July 2018 takes 4th place among monthly amount of precipitations in ranked range of meteorological observations since 1945.

This summer precipitations were mostly torrential, strong rains that reached criteria of dangerous phenomenon, were registered every month.  Extremely strong rain was observed on June, 14-15 at the meteorological station Berezino with 71 mm of precipitation.  60 mm of precipitation fell out in 12 hours in Brest, 59 mm - on July, 14 in Zhitkovichi, 73 mm – on July, 21 in Gomel. 70 mm of precipitation fell out in 3, 5 hours in Kostukovichi, 32 mm - in 15 minutes on July, 25 in Zhlobin. 54 mm of precipitation fell out in the area of hydrological point Malye Vikorovichi on August, 1 in less than 2 hours. 60 mm of precipitation fell out in the area of hydrological point Lopatino in 4,5 hours at night on July 31 –  August, 1. 83 mm fell out in 7,5 hours in Gomel on August, 18. 65 mm fell out in 3 hours in Verhnedvinsk. 50 mm of precipitation fell out in 12 hours at night in Borisov on August, 26. 
Rains were accompanied by thunders, hailstones, enhanced gusts of wind in certain areas. Highest speed of wind was registered in Gorky on July, 29.
