Climate characteristic of January 2019

Air temperature in January was -5,1°С on average that is 0,7°С below climate normal.

Negative anomaly spread throughout the country. The greatest deviations of air temperature from climate normal were registered in Minsk and Mogilev regions (-0,7°С on average across the regions), the smallest – in Brest region (-0,5°С on average across the region). January was varying concerning temperature regime. Warming periods alternated with cooling periods. Air temperature decreased up to -15°С and lower in the coldest nights on most of the country. The lowest air temperature (-24,8°С) was registered in Bragin on January, 28. Air temperature increased up to positive values during daytime hours in the warmest days of the month. It reached a maximum (+4,9°С) in Vysokoye on January, 1. Second decade was the warmest in January with average air temperature which is 1,1°С above climate normal. Air temperature was below normal in the first and second decades of January. Third decade was the coolest with average air temperature which is 1,8°С below climate normal.

48 mm fell out on average in Belarus that is 120% of monthly climate normal. Precipitations spread unevenly across the country. Most of precipitations were registered in Grodno region (55,1 mm or 153% of climate normal), least of it – in Brest region (33,8 mm or 91% of climate normal). Precipitations were in the form of the rain, snow and wet snow. Maximum daily amount of precipitations (17 mm) was registered in Mozyr on January, 26.

Snow cover remain all the month, its height on January 31 was from 2 cm in Grodno and ro 39 cm in Ezerishche. There were fogs, glazed frost, complex snow depositions and wet snow build-up on certain days, icy roads, wind increase up to 15 m/s and more. Maximum speed wind (18 m/s) was registered at the meteorological stations of Grodno and Slutsk on January, 14 and 18 respectively.
