Climate characteristic of December 2019

Average air temperature in December 2019 was +1,9°С, that is 5,2°С above climate normal. In the ranked series from the warmest to the coldest December, December 2019 took second place after December 2006. Of the 10 warmest first winter months, 5 months fall on the period from 2010 to 2019.

Positive anomaly of air temperature spread throughout the republic and reached the highest values in Mogilev region (with average of 5,6 °C in the region), and the lowest in Brest region (with average of 4,5 ° C in the region).
Air temperature was mostly positive in the daytime. The maximum value (+ 12.8 ° С) was reached on December 18 at Drogichin station. On separate days, temperature daily records were exceeded but historical absolute maximum of the month remained the same. 
Night air temperatures ranged from -7 to + 3°С, and on the warmest nights they raised up to +4 + 8 ° С. The minimum air temperature (-8.6 °С) was recorded at Gorki station on December 2. 
All three decades of the month were warm, especially the third decade, the average air temperature of which turned out to be 6.5 °C higher than climatic norm. Such a warm third decade of December in Belarus was observed for the first time in 40 years. Due to the anomaly warm weather in December, a steady transition of the average daily air temperature through 0 ° С towards the downward direction has not yet been conducted, that means that climate winter did not come.

In general  48.1 mm of precipitation or 107% of December climate normal fell out in Belarus over the month. Precipitation spread unevenly throughout the country. Most of precipitation fell out in Vitebsk region - 70 mm or 143% of climate normal. The least of precipitation was observed in Brest region - 39.1 mm (89% of climate normal).

Precipitation fell out in form of rain, snow and sleet. Snow cover throughout the month repeatedly appeared and collapsed. On the last day of the month, snow cover ranged from 0.1 cm to 11 cm. 
Fogs were observed on certain days of t month, glaze-ice and rime phenomena was observed during periods of cooling (on December 31, sticking of wet snow up to 15 mm in Naroch). On roads, glaze was observed in places. Throughout the month on certain days wind reached 15 m /s and more, maximum value of wind speed (21 m / s) was recorded at Verkhnedvinsk station on December 18.
